Shanghai Unicom: Building a Smart Parking System

Huawei Partnered with Shanghai Unicom to Pilot 4.5G NB-IoT

Before the opening of MWC Shanghai in 2015, Huawei, together with Shanghai Unicom and China Unicom Network Technology Research Institute, initiated the pilot operation of the first CIoT technology based on 4.5G NB-IoT. This momentous launch marked a pioneering achievement with the combined presentation of a pilot project featuring intelligent parking. Launch of the pilot technology indicates a shift towards a new CIoT technology based on NB-IoT. This transformation helps China Unicom accelerate efforts in the creation of a new industrial layout to embrace the new era of IoT, and match the "Internet+" national strategy.

NB-IoT, as an important feature of 4.5G, is the latest CIoT technology based on LTE. Deep coverage gains and level of connectivity provided by NB-IoT are respectively up to 100 times and over 1000 times higher than those provided by LTE. The power consumption of NB-IoT terminals amounts to only one tenth of that of LTE terminals. The coverage gains of NB-IoT are 20 dB higher than that of GSM. In addition, NB-IoT only uses the 200 kHz spectrum and can reuse resources of inventory networks to help operators rapidly construct networks. These technological breakthroughs have laid a solid fundamental foundation towards the increased popularity and implementation of intelligent IoT.

Currently, Huawei provides end-to-end solutions. Beside traditional network devices, Huawei provides unified service management platforms and communication chips as the optimal support for operators' NB-IoT commercial deployment. Huawei, in joint collaborative agreements with strategic partners such as China Unicom, are leading NB-IoT development in a number of vertical industries. These encompassing vertical industries include that of public infrastructure, agriculture, manufacturing, wearable devices, and transportation, to build a better connected world. Huawei is persistently committed to the construction of a stable and open NB-IoT ecosystem to promote innovative technology applicable for commercial use.

The pilot project of intelligent parking in Shanghai is a typical application of NB-IoT. This functionality requires that parking stall detectors periodically report status data (such as stall usage) to the server through NB-IoT. Drivers can then conveniently query the stall usage with a mobile APP at any given opportunity, which positively adds to the convenience of daily life. This technology is one of the best featured examples of the "Internet+" application.

Wang Jun, President of Huawei Wireless Network FDD Product Line, said that "Huawei supports operators' efforts to face the increasing challenges from vertical industries and welcomes the pursuit to tenaciously seize any potential massive opportunity. We have already deeply collaborated with operators from China, Europe, the Middle East, and the Asia Pacific region to ensure that NB-IoT will be commercialized globally throughout 2016. "
