América Móvil is the leading provider of integrated telecommunications services in Latin America. From its base in Mexico, it provides its customers with a portfolio of value-added services and enhanced communications solutions in 25 countries spanning Latin America, the U.S., and Central and Eastern Europe. Claro Chile is a registered trademark of América Móvil in nine countries.
As the digital transformation pioneer of América Móvil, Claro Chile partnered with Huawei in 2015 to develop IT cloudification. As digital transformation progresses, Claro Chile once again pioneers in an agile business development mode and starts a Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) revolution.
Agility, Efficiency, and Intelligence Are Vital to Carrier TransformationThe rapid development of mobile Internet, high-level penetration of smart terminals, and continuous erosion of OTT businesses have forced carriers to improve their services. To meet market demands driven by the Internet, carriers' service functions and network capabilities are becoming increasingly complex. However, traditional IT infrastructure hinders carrier development with its high operation costs, poor resource utilization, and difficult O&M. As carriers' service requirements change, carriers have increasingly high agility, flexibility, and scalability requirements and are in dire need of fast and efficient software delivery.
PaaS innovation cannot be achieved overnight. Problems must be tackled one by one. Claro Chile has two major requirements: quicker application deployment and PaaS construction over its existing Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS). The first requirement is to improve application deployment, and the second is to avoid repeated construction and improve management efficiency.
Containerization and Servitization Alleviate Customer PainsAfter discussion with Claro Chile, Huawei proposed to start with middleware renovation, which would have little impact on the service plane and which could be done independently of Independent Software Vendors (ISVs). In addition, middleware is small and constitutes ideal grains for containers.
Huawei renovated six applications/databases and defined services within a month, including platform construction, application renovation, and deployment. The six applications are:
By servitization capsulation, the Huawei PaaS platform delivers the following benefits:
1. Reduced costs: Unified IaaS and PaaS resource management improves O&M efficiency.
2. Agile deployment: On-demand application of middleware and database resources and automatic deployment of applications promote application deployment efficiency.
3. Reliable operation: Containerization enables application expansion or contraction within seconds.
Huawei's PaaS platform brings the following benefits:
1. Unified monitoring and efficient O&M
Seamless convergence of Huawei FusionStage with HUAWEI CLOUD Stack ensures continuous resource supply. Unified monitoring and centralized O&M prevent requirements for extra O&M investment due to PaaS platform introduction, maximizing resource management and maintenance efficiency.
2. Agile deployment based on preconfigured templates
3. Elastic scaling and reliable operation
When the traffic volume reaches the preset alarm threshold, the system quickly adds a specified number of container instances to the container cluster within 10 seconds to disperse the pressure for existing container nodes, ensuring stable and reliable running of the system.
The PaaS foundation has been laid, but this is insufficient. To achieve application flexibility, agility, and reusability, we also need to rebuild business applications. For subsequent business development of Claro Chile, Huawei made a "Three Steps" plan:
1. Build a unified IaaS and PaaS service catalog to improve resource supply flexibility and agility.Services are the foundation of enterprises. For Claro Chile, Huawei, or any other company, the ultimate goal of any technical renovation and upgrade is to provide users with better services. In the current Internet ecosystem, the rule of survival is no longer "big fish eat small fish," but "fast fish eat slow fish." Only by improving business agility and innovation vitality and quickly building their own ecosystem can carriers survive fierce competition now and remain competitive. Claro Chile has a long way to go in its innovation and transformation, but with Huawei, its future looks bright.
